When Should You Pump Out Your Septic Tank Next?

Questions to Consider When Deciding How Often to Pump

Septic Tank Pumping Frequency

When to pump your tank…ah…that is the question. This is a popular question that we receive all the time here at Cooke’s Plumbing and Septic in Stuart.

When it comes to how often your septic tank needs a ‘pump out’ there are several factors that you can use a guideline. These factors include: the system design, the tank capacity and how often your septic system is used by your house.

Gravity vs. Pump

One of the key factors in determining pumping frequency is whether your system uses a gravity flow and/or whether a sump pump is connected to your system. Most systems in the Port St. Lucie and Stuart area use gravity flow with drain field.

Water Conditioning

Does your septic tank have a water-conditioning unit connected to it with recharge water? This might include water softener, iron filter or other devices. Do you use any mild cleaning products and detergents? How about limiting anti-bacterial products?

Usage Frequency

How often you do laundry is another important factor to consider. Do you have a top-loading washer that conserves water or do you have a front-loading machine? Does your residence have low-flow toilets and shower heads?  Do you make sure faucets are shut and notice and fix any leaks promptly?

Other Usage Factors

How frequently do you have overnight visitors or groups of guests in your home? Is there a home office or a home-based business such as a daycare center, salon, or other water-intensive business that will increase the amount of water the system handles?

The Size of the Tank Matters

Lastly, consider the capacity of your tank (not including the pump tanks), the number of bedrooms and how many people are living in your abode.
